a over 80-year-old building. Bettei Umekoji is 7 minutes from Kyoto station by car. From the house it is a 5-minute walk to the Kyoto Aquarium. In this area there are many sights related to the Shinsen-gumi such as: To-ji Temple, Mibu-dera Temple, Nishi-Hongwan-ji Temple and the Shimabara Oomon. Nyakuichi-jinja Shrine is a 13-minute walk away. Here you will find a deity to good luck and career success, which is associated with Taira no Kiyonori. There are four Japanese style rooms in this house so 2 families traveling together will be comfortable here. On the opposite side of the garden we installed a Shigaraki cemaric bathtub which blends perfectly witht he elegance and charm of a machiya. This is also one of the rare guesthouses where you are welcome to bring your pets.Kimono or Yukata (a casual summer kimono) are available for rent at our office at Kyoto station.

Take a walk through Shimabara

Take a walk through Shimabara, which is the oldest entertainment area in Japan. The shimabara-Oomon and surrounding area remain unchanged since olden times. A lot of personalities from the Shinsengumi used to come. With the great door remaining, the place still has an atmosphere similar to the one it had long ago.





Try some local restaurants or take a short trip to Gion or Ponto-cho. Bento, Japanese boxed meals, can be delivered. (Reservations required)





Relax in the "Shigaraki ware" tub. It has a far-infrared effect. The water is scented with our original herbal mix.





At end of the day, enjoy a sound sleep on hand crafted bedding filled with soft down.

Experience the morning service at To-ji or Nishi-Hongwan-ji. Also don't miss the very popular To-ji antique market on the 21st. of each month.





Try a Japanese breakfast in the Kyoto wholesale market with the locals. The popular bakery ""Shizuya"" is also a good choice.




The aquarium

After you checkout visit the Kyoto Aquarium. There is a large lawn and steam trains that the kids will love. It is a good place to walk dogs.

Its main hall is famous for its big stage. From its 18m height you can have a panoramic view of Kyoto. The classical itinerary is to go from Kiyomizudera, go through Kodai-ji, then walk to Yasaka Shrine, Gion.

Kinkakuji Temple

From the Muromachi area (14-16th century), the Kinkakuji Temple was established by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. No matter how much you have admired its shining gold, it is as magnificient as the first time. The Kinkakuji under the snow, though a rare sight, is particularly stunning. The site is said to be really big but you can visit it including the garden in around one hour.

Fushimi Inari Taisha Sanctuary

Famous for its thousand vermillion torii gates. Going through its many torii gates you can choose to go to the main spot and go back, then it will take 30 minutes, but you can also choose to do the course that will lead you up to the Inari Mountain. It takes 2 hours but it is appreciated for the stunning view of Kyoto landscape that you can admire.

Kyoto Aquarium and Railway Museum

On the site of the Umekoji Park, there are two places to enjoy. The Kyoto Aquarium, one of the largest inland aquariums, has the giant japanese salamander typical of the Kamogawa ecosystem. The Kyoto Railway Museum has a train driving simulator, experiences of different jobs, from kids to adults everyone can enjoy it.
